Kenya invented the modern community-conservancy model. Over 230 registered conservancies now manage roughly 6.36 million hectares.

What is a conservancy

Land voluntarily set aside by a community or landowner for wildlife conservation and compatible economic use, governed by their own boards rather than the state.

KWCA counts 230+ registered conservancies covering approximately 6.36 million hectares — about 11% of Kenya's land.

Major conservancies

Laikipia — Ol Pejeta, Lewa, Loisaba. Northern — Namunyak, Sera, Melako (NRT). Mara — Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, Mara North. Amboseli — Selenkay, Kimana. Coast — Kuruwitu, Mikoko Pamoja.
