The Mara Elephant Project (MEP) is a conservation organization established to protect the elephants in the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. This special trip provides an overview of the innovative Elephant Friendly Farming Initiative meant for peaceful coexistence.
Your excursion starts with a scenic drive to the 5-acre MEP Experimental Farm, a 5-acre plot in a critical zone where elephant and human populations coexist directly. Elephants call home the protected area located here across the famous Mara River. Peaceful coexistence depends on knowing what draws elephants to raid adjacent farms. Under the guidance of a driven team, you will start a guided farm tour, learning about the challenges that local farmers face and the challenges crop raiding has on people and elephants.
You'll see the experimental plots with various crops and learn about their effectiveness in deterring elephants.
This tour showcases MEP's efforts to find alternative crops that deter elephants while supporting local farmers.
A passionate MEP team member will guide you through the farm and share their expertise.
While the tour is informative and engaging, it may not be specifically designed to hold the attention of very young children.
